Six Hour Sundown w/support from Stormborn & Hollywood Trash – 22.03.12 – The Intrepid Fox

Despite the Intrepid Fox being my favourite pub in London this was surprisingly my first time reviewing one of their newly resurrected live music nights, for those of you unfamiliar with venue the live music takes place upstairs on a new recently installed larger stage whilst the normal bar is located downstairs, the organisers here work very hard to ensure a professional environment thus bringing forth a professional show.

I arrived early and was fortunate enough to witness the sound checks and having only heard one of tonight’s line up previously I was enjoying what I heard.

First up were Hollywood Trash are a glam metal outfit from Portsmouth and as they take the stage influences such Mötley Crüe, Crash Diet and Guns ‘n’ Roses are all apparent, whilst being a fairly young bunch they have the confidence of hardened giggers and set off with their sleazy set with the first track “Back for More”. The guys show a confidence woefully missing from many young bands and straight away pull in crowd moving on to the third track in their set with a very competent cover of Crash Diet’s “Queen Obscene” they then move on to a very catchy “Mr Rock ‘N’ Roll” the guys have time at the end of their set for a quick encore and impromptu additional song in the form of Mötley Crüe ‘s “Girls Girls Girls”

Overall this band were very good however a couple things let them down (which I am sure they will overcome with practice)and I give them a very healthy 6/10.

Full Set list: Back For More, Judas Kiss, Queen Obscene (cover), Mr Rock ‘N’ Roll, Hollywood Queen.

Encore: Girls, Girls, Girls (cover)

Next up this evening were Stormborn and some of you may have already read my colleague’s review of them from their show at the Purple Turtle in January (which you can read here).  Stormborn are a five piece London based power/heavy metal group who bring to the stage a show that is deserving of any metal audience in the UK from the smallest bar right up to a major festival, they fill a gap in the UK Metal scene and whilst I was I watching I did for some reason write on pad “NWOBPM” the additional “P” being Power, yes that’s correct British Power Metal of which there are only a handful of bands (the only one I can think of right now is Sorcerer’s Spell).

Anyway they open up with “Survive” which without repeating the previous review too much is a charged opening track with enough of  every element of the group to let you know just what they are about which is essentially heavy and hard guitars with soaring solo’s, stonking drums and Bass and clean vocals.

Again the band found themselves facing an encore and let loose a fantastic cover of Maiden’s “The Trooper” which was very well received especially by me as a massive Maiden fan, thanks guys!

Step up from the first band on overall performance and for that I give them a very respectable 7.5/10.

Full Setlist: Jumperoo/Intro, Survive, No Man’s Land, Source of All, In The End, Edge of the World, Stormborn, Scorched Earth.

Encore: The Trooper (cover).

Next up and headlining this evening we have the very talented Six Hour Sundown, for those of you who don’t know Six Hour Sundown they are a London based five piece fronted by the gorgeous Lauren Harris with Tom Gentry & James Bennett on Guitars, Mitch Witham on Bass and the super talented Olly Smith on the Drums.

They opened up with “1000 Miles” a medium paced rock song with a lovely guitar intro accompanied by some high hat then joined by a sweet bass line then the drums kick in properly followed by Lauren’s soothing vocals.

Here the band tried to catch me out as I had previously pinched the set list to save myself having to scribble it down as they played however instead of “Shadow Of My Past” which I was expecting (they played it third in the end) they kicked into “Smoke and Mirrors” a full on rock track with some heavier guitars and soaring vocal.

All the way through their ten track set they display the talent and skill which I have become accustomed to since seeing the band from very early on in their career and have had the pleasure of watching them grow in many ways, one thing I would say is do not go along to a Six Hour Sundown show expecting anything like Maiden as you won’t get it however if you do like decent rock music delivered professionally and skilfully go along to their next show and give them a listen.

Fantastic performance as always and I say their overall is a splendid 8/10 (gotta leave them trying for more)

Full Set list: 1000 Miles, Smoke & Mirrors, Shadow of my Past, Angels, Blow Out The Candle, Silence When I Scream, Fire & Lightning, Rain On Me, All My Life, Jekyll & Hyde.

Encore: Shadow Of My Past, Jekyll & Hyde.
