Sons of Icarus – Sons of Icarus

Sons of Icarus are a young British four piece. Three of the members, Andy Masson (vocals and guitar), Alex Masson (bass and backing vox) and drummer Mike McQuillan met at school in Northamptonshire and jammed together before enrolling at the Academy of Contemporary Music where they met the final piece of the jigsaw, guitarist Steve Balkwill. Although this is the band’s debut release, they already have serious credentials having opened at both Sonisphere and Download in 2011 as a result of winning the Marshall ‘Ultimate Band Contest’

Starting off the EP is a track called “You Want It All” and it kicks off with a heavy as fuck riff reminiscent of the great UK classic rock scene.
Andy Masson’s vocals complement Steve Balkwill’s riffs perfectly. The drumming is not overplayed, the bass is a bit mellow, but when it’s all combined, the result is a dynamite rock track. It’s a monster kicking in at just over 7 minutes, you need balls to do this on a four track ep, and even more balls to use it as the opener.

“Not Myself” has a really good up tempo pace to it and is something that the likes of the Rival Sons are currently doing, trying to sound like a British classic rock band, though the British still do it best, and the Sons Of Icurus are currently doing it better.
“Cant let Go” has a solid ‘bang your head’ riff and although in my opinion, the weakest track on here, it still pretty much kicks some serious ass. Then finally, all too quickly we’re onto the last track “Sick to the Teeth”. This doesn’t have the killer riff start like the previous songs, this is more slower paced, but with a bluesy, old school rock approach to make an intoxicating blend of the old and the new.

A great EP this, each song combines stunning vocal’s supported by inspiring and interesting musicianship. This has a polish and maturity way beyond expectation. No wonder these guys won the Marshall Ultimate Band Contest.
The Sons Of Icarus are flying high, but I feel they wont be crash landing anytime soon.
And I bet they have big balls.
A best of British 9/10
