Summary:

He may well be a woolly headed beast but it's another top notch album from 'Spunk Volcano & The Eruptions' which should appeal to fans of Dirt Box Disco (although that goes without saying really!), Born To Destruct, Anti Pasti and The Stranglers.

Spunk Volcano

Once seen, never forgotten, could be said of Spunk Volcano the larger than life guitarist from Midlands Punk Rock band Dirt Box Disco. He of the one-eyed, safety pinned balaclava with inbuilt orange woolly mohawk does his bit to keep the elderly ladies of his local knitting circle in business! As well as his unusual headgear he is a fashion icon and can often be seen wearing barely there Fred Flintstone jockey shorts and a fringed leather jacket adorned with umpteen badges. Spunk Volcano is the main song writer for Dirt Box Disco and he is such a prolific writer he also has a side project Spunk Volcano & the Eruptions, in which he is joined by two members of Dirt Box Disco, Deadbeatz Chris and Maff Fazzo on bass and drums respectively, Ste Lingard and Tom ‘G Force’ Batterbee provide lead and rhythm guitars. Their debut self titled EP was released in early 2014 followed by debut album Injection later the same year, both to critical acclaim. Their second album Shit Generation will be released via STP records on 17th March 2016.

Spunk Volcano

Opening track Massive Mistake Masterclass proves not to be a massive mistake, it’s pure (master) class with it’s punishing beat, it reminds me of Born To Destruct‘s Push The Button. The second track is the track which gives the album it’s title Shit Generation and whilst far more brutal in it’s delivery I thought of The Undertones Teenage Kicks and Another Dead Soldier by Anti Pasti. XR3 about the Ford XR3 car, a popular hot-hatch back in the 1980s, containing some well crafted lyrics which give a history of popular cars back then, such as ‘It goes faster than a fucking Astra’ and ‘It looks harder than a Ford Granada’ is bound to be an anthemic sing along song at live shows with people joining in with the ‘I Fucking Love Its’. Send The Boys Round is another song which should get plenty of audience participation, a great fighting song with lots of ‘Oi, Oi, Oi’s’ and some soaring riffs. X Factor with it’s ‘Na Na Na Na Na Na’s’ reminded me of Dirt Box Disco’s I Just Want to be a Girl and ends with the line ‘… and here is your 2016 X Factor winner Spunk Volcano.’  What Simon Cowell would have to say about Spunk Volcano & The Eruptions, I dread to think, but I would be glued to the TV every week if Spunk was in the competition and he would definitely get my vote! I picked up the Dirt Box Disco influence in the next track Tattoo, this time I Don’t Want Anything For Christmas. The riffage in Satisfaction Guaranteed sounds almost keyboard like at the beginning reminding me of Duchess by The Stranglers although it soon speeds up into something more brutal.

Shut Up Or Fuck Off another good one for a bit of audience particpation. More nods to Dirt Box Disco in I’m Not Sure this time I Don’t Want to Go Out With You. The album ends as it began with a punishing beat and when Spunk was singing the forevers in Together Forever As Ghosts I thought of The Police singing the ‘So Lonelys‘ in their track of that name. He may well be a woolly headed beast but it’s another top notch album from Spunk Volcano & The Eruptions which should appeal to fans of Dirt Box Disco (although that goes without saying really!), Born To Destruct, Anti Pasti and The Stranglers.

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
