UK alt rockers STATIC FIRES drop their debut album, Thirteen, on 10th August. Before then, we can a talk with the guys about their history and background…..
What is the full band line up, who plays what?
Our band is made up of Sam Randles – lead vocals, rhythm guitar, Jack Clements – lead guitar, backing vocals, Tom Gibbins – bass guitar and Jack Piper – Drums, backing vocals.
How and when did the band form?
The band technically formed in 2013, but we really got started in August 2014, in Swansea.
When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?
After Sam joined, we tried out a few variations of our current line up, including Jack Piper singing and a 5th member – Alex on drums or singing. It was when Alex couldn’t make it to one band practice that we really started to gel and decided to continue as a four piece.
We properly realised out potential when Jack Clements got two days in a recording studio for his 18th birthday and we recorded our first two original songs – ‘Spread Your Wings or Learn to Fall’ and ‘Dinner With a Psychopath’. Hearing the recordings back for the first time spurred us on to push harder and start gigging more.
Who are your musical influences?
We have a pretty mixed bag of musical tastes including Less Than Jake, Incubus, Disclosure and Zara Larsson, but our favourite bands and the bands we’ve been compared to the most are Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains and Kings of Leon.
How far back does your history with each other extend?
Tom and Jack C. have gone to the same school since the age of 3 and we later met Sam at age 8, when he moved to our primary. We all went to the same secondary school where we met Jack P. So the four of us have been together since we were 11, in 2008.
If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?
(In sign language) Our music provides our unimpaired listeners with an upbeat, catchy hard rock flavour, but occasionally straying into both softer ballad and heavier, grungier territories. If you came to one of our gigs, we bet you could still feel the rhythm and be able to dance along with everyone else.
Where can we find your social media sites?
You can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and our music is on all major platforms, including Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Shazam and so on…
