In case you missed it Lioness is the debut album project from Monika Demmler aka ‘Stony Sugarskull’. Music Teacher by day and songstress by night.

The Berlin artist brings you a feline mix of psychedelic, sugar-surf- edgy punk rock. The devils in the details as the sound of Stony Sugarskull reminds me of a modern-day twist on the Dead Kennedys on album open House on Fire.

Lioness gives you the feeling of being in the setting of a David Lynch movie.

Stony’s femme fatale character is dragging on a cigarette, whilst her sultry spoken words lure you into her dark plot on That’s It. Stony’s vocal sound reminds me of French covers band Nouvelle Vague.

The edgy quirky off beats and slow strumming guitar builds up the ambience of a film noir/dark romance setting, which is heightened by an eccentric harp/piano twang, and lopsided rhythms.

The album takes you on a journey from being in a dreamy swagger to warped in one fell swoop. This might be due to Stony’s use of sonic sounds throughout the album.

I’ve chosen the track Bentley to give you an idea. It has the feel of Bauhaus meets T.Rex. The bass line intro throbs to a rocking beat but it’s lost to the eclectic marching drum beats and undertones. Giving it an erratic sound like two separate songs being played over each other.
