Summary:

Disappointingly, this is not the full concert, however ‘Renegade’ is for me the best of the best here, a rousing performance of this much loved classic brings the house down.

It’s a bit of a strange one this, back in 2015 this concert was released as a CD, which was superb, so to get the DVD version of the same show through the post I was beyond excited. However my excitement was short lived when I discovered that four songs from the CD were missing from this DVD version, mainly “Grand Illusion,” “Suite Madame Blue,” “Lady,” and “Come Sail Away.”

I can see no logical reason for doing this, as I’m sure there is loads of room on a DVD for the full concert, and the extras they have edited into the concert performance. There are interviews with the band, the management, even the roadies, all are informative, enjoyable to watch and are genuinely funny. But couldn’t they go on the disc as extras?

However badly I feel about this, the show Styx puts on is amazing, with both the sound and picture quality being superb, this does help to ease the pain.

Founding member vocalist and keyboardist Dennis DeYoung finally split with Styx back in 1999 over musical differences and many people thought they couldn’t carry on without him, however for me Tommy Shaw is the real diamond in this group, and he proves it time and time again in this video with his great vocals and even better guitar playing. New vocalist Lawrence Gowan has worked his socks off to be accepted as the new voice of Styx and to a certain degree, he has been. There will always be the die hards, the purists and the haters, but if you leave that attitude at the box office, Gowan is a fantastic singer, an impressive keyboardist and a great frontman.  Styx needs an impressive showman to work alongside Tommy and Lawrence fits the bill perfectly.

Filmed during the massively successful 2014 Soundtrack of Summer Tour, Live at The Orleans Arena Las Vegas features Styx performing a career-spanning set list such as “Too Much Time On My Hands,” “Renegade” and “Blue Collar Man,” where they are joined by former Eagles guitarist Don Felder.

Other notable highlights include Tommy Shaw walking around the arena while playing a monstrous guitar solo during “Superstars.”

‘Renegade’ is for me the best of the best here, a rousing performance of this much loved classic brings the house down.
