Summary:

Whilst the songs and overall quality are good, they're all, in the main, very similar but Fat.Hot.Sexy is something you can put on in the background and forget about, rather than something you put on when you want something loud, fast and exciting.

German Stoner Rock band Sumosluts released their third album Fat.Hot.Sexy on Friday 13th September 2013 on Noisehead Records. Formed in Bamburg, Germany in 2010 their Debut album ‘An Awesome Piece of Shit‘ was released in 2011, followed by ‘Time To Freak Out‘ in 2012 and now ‘Fat.Hot.Sexy

When I hear the term Stoner Rock I expect something weird and psychedelic like Hawkwind but the sound is much more American Grunge. The opening track Son of a Bitch is also the first official single from the album. Opening with catchy riffs and a great rhythm it set the pace for a solid rock album although more easy listening than outstanding.

The highlight track has to be Before I Die with its great opening riffs it reminded me a little of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers – say a cross between Can’t Stop and Warped. Also picking up flavours of Peal Jam, Sound Garden and Alice in Chains throughout and whilst the songs and overall quality are good, they’re all, in the main, very similar but Fat.Hot.Sexy is something you can put on in the background and forget about, rather than something you put on when you want something loud, fast and exciting. Quite calming – possibly as I managed to listen to it a few times on my four mile commute with no notable road rage incidents! If you like Stoner Rock and Grunge then Fat.Hot.Sexy is worth listening to.

(Note – bands should perhaps think a little more about the name they decide upon, because trying to research Sumosluts on the internet did not immediately bring up a German Stoner Rock Band. I won’t tell you what came up when I put Sumosluts in a search engine, but I just hope my laptop is never confiscated for a criminal investigation!)

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
