Summary:

An all consuming gig by the Takeaway Thieves was truly monstrous!

Where does the time go? It’s hard to believe that my first Takeaway Thieves gig was an acoustic set at the Waterloo in Blackpool, June 16th 2018. It was only their second gig, the first being the night before after only nine rehearsals, opening up a five band bill to celebrate the 50th birthday of legend/leg end,Stevie Rox and it was my first ever review of the band. Many more followed, the latest being their recent gig at the Live Rooms in Chester, supporting Hayseed Dixie.

It was an absolute sweat box, the fullest I’ve ever seen it and I was told on good account that the attendance was about 400. Of course the place to be was front barrier and as Lemmy once proclaimed, “Only way to feel the noise is when it’s good and loud”, point proven when they tore into set opener ‘Kickin My Heart Around’, taken from their latest album Diamond Point, and their set was split between that and their debut studio album 9. You didnt just hear it, you felt it to as riff after riff, after motherfu**ing riff flew out of a seismic P.A system. The band fuelled vocal harmonies gave them a gang like mentality, and that vibe carried on for their short but sweet forty minutes of choice cuts.

Their showmanship was like four Thunderbird puppets flying around the stage as drummer Max Yates stayed safely behind his kit, shaking the venues foundations. They were not throwing out some dodgy kebabs tonight, but a feast of Henry VIII size proportions, throwing their chicken bones over their shoulders. A shout out for myself from lead singer Peter McLoughlin was an unexpected surprise, so I’ll expect the red carpet treatment on their next tour. Only joking guys! Another highlight were the near the knuckle quips from Peter, but even though Yuletide is looming, they would probably best not be put in Marks And Spencer Christmas crackers and Neil Hunter, you forgot to ask Heidi to run an iron over the setlist!

One more thing is I’d like to dedicate this review to Peter Lambe for his permission to use his gig photos.
