It’s been a bit quiet on The Deep front lately which I’ve finally fathomed out. They have enlisted a new drummer Alan Mogg and been working on a soon to be released EP titled Watching You, which is very much worth the wait!
Value for money is a certainty as it contains four brand new studio tracks and four live ones from their debut album Premonition recorded at the British Steel Festival in Fisme, France 2016. EP opener ‘Prepare To Rock’ is aptly titled as they are prepared, locked and loaded as they charge headlong into four minutes of full blooded heavy metal. Riffs strafe alongside some hefty drum pounding and lead vocalist Tony Coldham seems to be singing with a new lease of life with a performance that brings to mind vintage Ian Gillan. Air guitars should be at the ready for ‘Dead Man Walking’ as the intense riffing from Paul Smith and Mick Feleppa come at you thick and fast.
As good as their old songs are, ‘Watching You’ is a prime example of how they have raised the bar with the new material. It’s a heavy power ballad with the some of the best riffs they have penned backed with superhuman vocals. Last studio track ‘Taking Over’ is a drum driven turbo charger with added nitroglycerin for the hyperactive guitar solo. The four live tracks show that The Deep are a force to be reckoned with onstage as they muscle up album versions of ‘Premonition’, ‘The Rider’, ‘All I Want’ and my personal favourite ‘Night Stalker’ but don’t take my word for it, buy the EP and the album!
