Summary:

If you're a fan of Manowar or Anvil then this could be worth checking out - otherwise there are better albums out there to listen to.

The Rods were formed in 1980 by David Feinstein who had previously been a member of Elf with his cousin Ronnie James Dio. The band lasted till the late 80s and released several albums before eventually splitting. In 2008 the band reformed with the lineup from their 1982 album – David Feinstein, Garry Bordonaro and Carl Canedy. Since reforming they’ve been fairly quiet on the album front, releasing “Vengeance” in 2011 and now this new album, “The brotherhood of metal”.

“1982” is a song all about themselves, but either age has affected their memories or they’re attempting to re-write history as the chorus “The Rods were born in 1982” overlooks the fact that by then they’d already released an album and EP during the first two years of the band’s existence.

In many ways The Rods remind me of Anvil – neither band reached the heights of success they hoped for, and in both cases listening to the music it doesnt surprise me. It’s decent music but it’s just not special. Nothing about the album makes me think I need to rush out and buy a copy, but equally if it’s playing I’d be happy enough to leave it playing – it’s good but not good enough to compete with many of the other bands around.
