Tyla’s Dogs D’amour – INVINO VERITAS  – album out now

Back on the juice or is that just irrelevant?!  In Vino Veritas is the latest album from Tyla’s Dogs D’Amour.  But as we know  Tyla J Pallas has been a hard-working underdog since becoming part of The Dog’s D’amour and ever since the poetic musician, word-slinger hasn’t hung up his swag, cause there’s always more swag to be made, in the artistic sense that is. From being a solo ‘heroine’ selling and creating art in many forms from hand painted pictures to the poetry and storybooks.  Tyla is like a machine and has penned many albums since going solo and using his faithful 8-track and now Mac to provide the beats, backing tracks and harmonies, be it here in the UK or in Spain or some other exotic location. Tyla has always been around making his worth in some form or another.

For the last few years, Tyla has found a pack of new dogs and performs under the name of Tyla’s Dog’s D’Amour, with Gary Pennick on guitar, Matty J Cassidy on Bass and Simon Hanson on drums.

In Vino Veritas was available as a pledge album and fortunately for me, I opted for the super deluxe version which also included 10 great cover songs: ‘In Musica Veritas’.   The Artwork is a thing of beauty, from Tyla’s hand-drawn characters to the stories told by the man himself within the CD book. It articulates a brief history of how Tyla got from A to B and continues to …C

I don’t know what all the fuss is about, the first song is III and if you’re an avid fan, you’ll be familiar having heard it played live,  but it was originally released acoustically back in 2015, so it’s nice to have an electric version and home for it on this album.  Tyla’s love of Gretsch Guitars has worn off on me and it’s one of the most handsome guitar sounds to hear ….you feel like your wandering the desert and at any moment duelling cowboys on horseback are going to head over the horizon or so the sound would have you believe on Black Confetti, complemented by Ian Douglas on Saxophone, you are taken on a ride to the old sounding days of The Dog’s Amour, and that’s not a bad place to be!

From the swanky Bottle of red to the eclectic bouncy Chicago Typewriter, the vibe for this album is rising until the pace is brought down by the rather melodic Everything to me, which is typically Tyla in every sense or could that be the same backing track he’s been using, so we’ve been unconditionally brainwashed to fall for these wonderful ditties he been producing?!  I hear him say Fuck off devil ‘don’t read me stories from the devils’ book’.   I don’t think Tyla was in people mood when he wrote that number, but it’s a great one to play to your enemies!!  Sliding up the Gretsch, I wonder if it’s ‘Bess’ his favourite guitar he’s strumming upon?  I bet she could tell a few tales of title track In Vino Veritas – To quote Wiki ‘’In vino veritas, also written as in uino ueritas, is a Latin phrase that means “in wine lies the truth”, suggesting a person under the influence of alcohol is more likely to speak their hidden thoughts and desires.’’  Well isn’t that the truth, with a little Dutch courage, aren’t we all ready to take on the world?!

Like a deck of cards the album folds with Movie Star, Tyla and his and band have been the actors in this master production, which has seen them deliver an Oscar performance of an album, so I hope they will be ‘dancing ‘neath the starry sky, ‘rather lying in the gutter looking at the stars’.

If you’re curious about Tyla’s Dogs D’Amour you can check them on the usual listening platforms. https://open.spotify.com/album/6bjbsttggUiPlrwFdGGtWk

But you won’t find anything given to Musica Veritas and it’s great cover tracks.

With two upcoming very special album launch shows on 8th December in York (sold out) and 13th December Edinburgh – I hope we get to hear not only the In Vino Veritas songs but also some of the Musica Veritas ones.
