Summary:

This is a great album that fans of Gothic or symphonic metal with female vocals should certainly check out.

Valkyre - Our glorious demiseValkyre formed a decade ago, releasing their first demo in 2005, then the EP Consolamentum in 2007.  That was it for releases until the end of 2013 when they released “Call of the Valkyrie” – the first single from their debut album, “Our glorious demise”.  The long gap is partly due to a couple of years where the band split before reforming, but since 2010 they have been performing including at MFVF where it’s almost unheard of for a band to play without having released an album, but that’s a sign of how good they are.

Of the tracks on the album, one, “Consolamentum” comes from the EP of the same name, and one, “A Good Day to Die” comes from the original 2005 demo.  Obviosuly the band have had plenty of time to refine and polish them along with writing the new material.

So what can you expect from this release?  Well, in short this is some excellent Gothic metal.  You’ve got beautiful vocals from Claudia Michelutti, plenty of power from the guitars, drums and bass, lovely piano in some of the tracks, nice orchestrations, and excellent production.  The vocals are clean female singing – no operatic style vocals here, and Valkyre have opted to keep just the one vocalist rather than pairing Claudia’s clean vocals with a growling male vocal as is common in so many bands these days.  There’s a strong Gothic element, and a good example of this is the song “A good day to die” where you’ll find the use of latin from a Catholic Requiem mass.
