Ashes and Dust, released on 24th July 2015 via the Mascot Label Group is only the third studio album Haynes has ever released under his own name, is a masterful work of art and a particularly important statement for Haynes. The songs are immediately and clearly different from his usual style – encompassing beautiful acoustic arrangements, a rootsy/Americana soundscape and honeyed vocals that cut straight through to the soul. Although many of these songs are brand new, some of the tunes that make up this album have been dear to Warren for years. In some cases he has been carrying them around for 20 or 30 years, waiting for the right time to record them. You can listen to the full album here

Talking about the Gold Dust Woman Warren elaborates, “The idea to record “Gold Dust Woman” came about due to the fact Grace Potter and myself have performed it onstage many times and in a lot of different settings, but we had never recorded a studio version. This seemed like a perfect opportunity to do so, and the instrumentation we utilized really helps capture the vibe of the song while taking it to another place. I’ve always loved the sound of two or three “lead” voices singing harmony, so Todd Sheaffer – Railroad Earth’s lead singer/guitarist – who is singing harmony throughout the project, added the third voice. On my last solo record, Man In Motion, we captured a similar but different sound by taking that approach with Ruthie Foster and Ivan Neville.”

Ahead of the upcoming Gov’t Mule tour Warren also talks about the new record; “We’re going to make a new Gov’t Mule record soon. I still want to make a jazz-influenced instrumental record, which I’ve never done. I still want to make a traditional blues record, which I’ve never done. The next Gov’t Mule record will be different from what we’ve ever done. And I love what I’m doing right now. I just don’t know in what order it will come, but I prefer it that way. I think that’s what keeps me inspired and keeps the energy flowing.”

Tickets for the tour are on sale now.
