Attacking your senses from the depths of Derby in the East Midlands, Brit metalcore crew, WE ARE SOVEREIGN, initially had a trying time finding the right personnel. Vocalist Laura Russell had been in bands drumming and screaming since the age of 15, and she wanted to create a band that would be fully committed to push the boundaries of the metalcore genre. Co-vocalist Ash joined Laura in 2019, but the project sadly hit a standstill due to the pandemic. By the end of 2020, things started to shift when both bassist Sam Maltby and Alfie Wickham (drums) were recruited. Guitarist Sebastian Foster also joined the ranks at the start of this year to brilliantly complete the line-up.
Musically, WE ARE SOVEREIGN have taken from a range of areas, with the group collectively citing influences from Blessthefall, A Day To Remember, My Chemical Romance, and Bring The Horizon to Bullet For My Valentine. With strong messages and subject matters running through every track, WE ARE SOVEREIGN are a band that want to share their experiences and journey with their audience. Their debut single, Bridges Burnt Lessons Learnt (Betrayal) features Ryan Tuck O’Leary from Fit For A King, and it’s a thunderous debut. It’s also born from vocalist Laura Russell’s own experiences of suffering for years with gender dysphoria, which resulted in a long battle with mental health. Now, after a life changing operation to feel comfortable within her own skin, Laura brings her experience to life in their debut single. Discussing the motivation behind the track, she states: “Being betrayed is one of the most painful human emotions we can encounter, and it can absolutely destroy you as a human being. I have had to deal with my operation and finding myself again; I also had to rebuild and repair after being deeply betrayed by somebody I loved and trusted at the time.”
With further singles on the horizon, the journey is only just beginning for WE ARE SOVEREIGN.
