Summary:

Overall this is one of the strongest albums Robin has released in recent years, a massively moving and at times a deeply thought provoking opus.

Robin Trower is unquestionably one of the world’s great guitar players, as a young boy I first heard ‘Bridge Of Sighs’ and I was hooked, his guitar tone clawing deep at my soul.

The new album features Trower on guitars, vocals and bass, with Chris Taggart on drums. It was produced by Livingstone Brown at Studio 91 in Newbury and is called ‘Where You Are Going To’.

It’s hard to accept that Robin is now 71 years old, instead of relaxing in an old musician’s home, he’s still out there, playing live and releasing some great music, and his latest album ‘Where You Are Going To’ sees Robin take lead vocals, as he has done on his past few releases (and not always with success). However on this Robin seems to have found his sweet spot, as he has never sounded better, the songs are strong as well, with the opening title track being a massive six minute melodic slow blues number.

‘When Will the Next Blow Fall’ is inspired by current events in Europe and how all people’s futures are uncertain.  It sees Robin very much at the front on social commentary.

Musically and lyrically this is similar to, and in a way carries on from his last album ‘Somethings About To Change’ with Robin exploring more musical alleyways.

‘Back Where You Belong’ is just such a song, relying on a blues-funk rhythm to carry the song as opposed to his early days progressive blues direction.

The final track ‘Delusion Sweet Delusion’ sees Robin combine soul, blues and a little funk to maybe give you a hint of where the next album will lead.

There are two songs on here which are dedicated to his late wife, ‘We Will Be Together Someday’ and ‘I’m Holding On To You’, both deeply personal, and both sung with a passion only a true blues master can conjure up.

Overall this is one of the strongest albums Robin has released in recent years, a massively moving and at times a deeply thought provoking opus.
