Wizz Wizzard Interview – April 2014

Wizz Wizzard answers a few questions to supplement our review of Rock Lives On by Wizz Acoustic.

Wizz Wizzard

You were a radio DJ at the tender age of 12. That’s really young and very impressive. How did you get into DJing?

Wizz: I was impressed bout some DJ’s here when I got to the age of 6 so I’ve learned at home as I got me own little studio .
I remember my turn tables needed over 30 minutes to warm up …lol to run 45 .or 33

Can you tell us a bit about your time as a Pirate DJ?

Wizz: Oh sure I was DJ at a station that was not legal and helped a guy who was DJ at radio mi amigo at day time and also radio caroline at night live from the North Sea .

What were your early musical influences?

Wizz: Rainbow, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Uriah Heep were my first albums.

What made you decide to become a perfomer yourself?

Wizz: When I was DJing at parties, the music changes too much for me. Lots of partys were changing into disco music for 4 hours and only 1 hour of rock music, that’s the reason I’ve stopped playing others’ music as a DJ and started my own band at the age of 20 I think ..but omg that was crap …lol

Can you play any instruments? If not what would you love to be able to play?

Wizz: I can play a few instrument but not real good …lol

I play a bit of drums, guitar and piano but me real instrument is my voice.

Tell us about the band Wizz Wizzard, who does/plays what?

Wizz: Ok at the mo we are a 4 piece band: –
Wizz  – vocals. SMB –  guitars. D Troy – bass guitar and Steve DC – drums.

Which other bands have members of Wizz Wizzard been in?

Wizz: Wizz was in several bands mostly cover bands
D Troy his first band is Wizz Wizzard
Steve played in lots of metal bands and played big gigs mostly as support band for Uriah Heep, Y & T and many other big bands.
SMB played, also, in lots of bands before he joined Wizz Wizzard.

How did you get the name Wizz Wizzard?

Wizz: omg …lol first the band name was Wizzard as Wizz likes magic stuff  but we had to change our name for a record deal as there was already a Wizzard in the UK and also one in Germany.
So we talked bout this and we changed into Wizz Wizzard as it is Wizz’s band

Are you real life wizard with pointy hat and wand? If so what’s your favourite spell? If not what spell would you cast if you could and why?

Wizz: hahahahahaa no I’m not a wizzard hahahahaha but would by cool if i was one of them :)
A spell : dont know :)

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
