Michael Schenker ‘Temple Of Rock Tour’ Manchester Ritz 10th May 2012

Exit State opened the show tonight, and it didn’t take long for Roy Bright and the rest of the guys to win the crowd over. During their 30 minute set playing down to earth hard rock and roll they showed us why they are one of the best up and coming bands around, tearing through songs from their debut record ‘Death Of A Rock star’ and the more recent ‘Black Veins’. If you have never seen Exit State before you need to see this band live, as they pack one hell of a punch.

After tonight’s performance I can categorically say that Mr Schenker has finally laid his demons to rest, I had seen him a few times previous, and all wasn’t well in his world, however at last year’s Hardrockhell festival, he nearly stole the show. Tonight he showed everybody why he is still rated as one of the world’s top guitarists.

He was at home tonight, at the front of the stage where he belongs, trademark baseball cap on, check. leather waistcoat on, check. Flying V, check.
What followed was a near two-hour set, split between Schenker’s solo output, including ‘Before the devil knows your dead’ taken from the new album ‘Temple Of Rock’, and his time spent with UFO and The Scorpions.

The Scorpions era was represented by two former members, in drummer Herman Rarebell and bassist Francis Buchholz, and musically by the likes of ‘Lovedrive’, ‘Another Piece of Meat’ and the inevitable ‘Rock You Like a Hurricaine’
The U.F.O back catalogue of classic songs was also raided, with ‘Lights Out’, ‘Let It Roll’, ‘Shoot Shoot’ and ‘Doctor Doctor’ bringing the biggest cheers from the sell out crowd.
A nice surprise was the inclusion of ‘Holiday’, always a favourite crowd sing-a-long song when played by the Scorpions, and it was no different tonight, with Doogie White taking a well-earned breather, and letting the crowd sing the song.
If I had to pick just one highlight it would have to be UFO’s epic ‘Rock Bottom’, Schenker cutting loose and was simply astonishing, as he showed everybody why he is still considered a true guitar legend. To put it simply, Schenker was spellbinding tonight.
If you still need convincing that you need to catch this tour, just take a look at the set list, it is epic.
