London based alt-rock band Rat Faced Lewey’s sophomore album The Fall of Man is drenched with passion and melody. Catchy simple clear lyrics are repeated to make perfect sing-along choruses. Slow intricate intros give birth to energising glorious bouncy fun.
First track Tell Your Friends About Me is reminiscent of Warrior Soul with its chugging guitar and simple riff and also has hints of Royal Blood. The ‘Let me see you’re comfortable’ chorus is a fine example of what we are to expect from the rest of the record. They have perfected simple repetitive choruses that have you singing along on first listen.
Second track Comfortable has an intro that calls to mind System of a Down before it turns into pop punk with hints of Frank Turner. It has a jump around grebo sound and was an obvious choice as the first single.
Forthcoming single The Pirate Song starts off with a sea shanty riff and the sound of waves. This progresses into the most old school metal track on the album, with its Toni Lommi riff and woah-oh-oh chorus, the type you can pump your arms in the air to. It also reminds of AFI and later Green Day.
Other highlights include the energetic up-tempo This Turtle; Fight My Noose, that has a Therapy? like broodiness; and the rap metal of the Title Track that builds up to a crescendo and ends with a soaring guitar solo.
Rat Face Lewey have mastered the ‘slow tempo followed by fast jump around’ sound of their grunge predecessors but have a much more New Wave of British Alt-Rock sound, similar to The Virginmarys. It is about time they broke out of London and showed the rest of the world how effective simplicity can be.
