Born Zero – Interview

We spoke to newcomers BORN ZERO about their formation and more, see below.

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Iggy Pritchard – 19 – Guitar, Backing Vocals

Tom Smith – 18 – Bass

Charlie Breasnan – 19 – Drums

Levi Louie – 19 – Vocals.

How and when did the band form?

Igg and Charlie originally started playing in bands together back when they were both still attending primary school, but the band started to become more serious to us when more recent members of the band started to join, and our sound started to progress into what it is today. This is around about the time where we came up with the band name and our first setlists 4/5 years ago.

Tell us anything interesting about your hometown?

Birmingham, the birthplace of Metal and home of Black Sabbath, judas priest, Napalm Death and God Flesh. Looking into other genres were home to UB40 and ELO, we have a diverse music scene so pretty much anything is welcome.

Where did the name of the band come from?

We came up with the name Born Zero because it represents our generation of people. All the band members were born in 2000, but the name is also a reference to our generation being lost, we are all zeros fighting for something while the worlds crashing down around us and it’s the human races fault for this, were the generation that has to live in a dysfunctional society and the planet our elders left for us  . Also, we all have freakish attitude to ourselves when we play live, we try to act like zeros, freaks to represent ourselves and our name.

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

We started to become a more mature, heavier and tighter sounding band when our current vocalist Levi joined the band four or five years ago. Our previous singer had a much more high-pitched voice which, with all respects didn’t suit our bands heavier sound. So, when Levi joined, he had a much lower, gravel-tone vocal and he could scream to which was a massive advantage for us because we could start writing heavier music which soon became the music you hear from us today. I think the band then started to progress even further when our bass player tom joined, due to him brining fresh ideas to the table in terms of song writing. He has a unique style of playing and writing which complements our sound very well.

Who are your musical influences?

We all each take influence from all genres but the main bands are – Black Sabbath, Guns n Roses, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Korn, Lamb of God, Machine Head, Pantara, Sepultura.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

We’re not looking for fame or money, we just want to make people feel and to be able to relate to people on a musical level, every show we play we want to be a memorable experience for the fans, some where people can mosh there aggression out or just loose themselves in the music. We take it one step at a time, we believe in the band and what we are doing, if we make one person’s night better that’s all we need. you wouldn’t be able to lock us down to one specific genre because of all the different influences from different genres of music we incorporate in ours. There’s not a lot of bands that can pull of making a song heavy and catchy and keep it consistently at a high standard in my opinion. A lot of bands we think struggle with the transition from heavy verses to big open choruses yet keep the energy at 100% this is what we think that’s this bands specialty. we feel like our band brings back the old yet offers a new, modern sound that moulds nice when put together.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

Sonically we are Fast, heavy and aggressive sounding yet a whole bunch of fun to listen to and see live. We have a unique sound with melodic riffs, catchy hooks and overall strive to create memorable music. The visual aspect of our music is also very important to us. Stage presence is our gateway to the audience’s minds. We believe that live gigs are not just about playing your songs right, but about keeping the energy up and giving people a show to remember in to keep the audiences engaged and most importantly entertained throughout the whole set.
