After a six year hiatus, Helmet have returned to the studio and released a new album titled Dead To The World. Released via earMUSIC, their formula of melody with muscle shines throughout the eleven tracks. Produced by lead guitarist and vocalist Page Hamilton who founded the band in New York in 1989, they were tagged as the “Thinking person’s heavy metal band”.

Available in CD Digipak, clear vinyl and digital download formats it oozes in with the driving grooves of ‘Life Or Death’. Huge riffs, the striking lead vocals and squealing lead guitar solos show that Page has not changed a winning formula. Other highlights are ‘I Love My Guru’. The intense lead guitar intro and rumbling riffs are backed by an increasingly angrier vocal. The hammer blow drumming from Kyle Stevenson is the icing on the cake. ‘Bad News’ is almost power pop until it kicks into gear for a heavy finish followed by the crushing doom rhythms of ‘Red Scare’.

‘Expect The World’ is an angst ridden slow burner as things heavy up again with the pounding ‘Drunk In The Afternoon’ with Page unleashing his most over the top solo on the album. ‘Look Alive’ is all bleak soundscapes, lush vocal harmonies and a guitar overload finish but my favourite song is ‘Green Shirt’ which bounces along like a quirkier Smashing Pumpkins.
