Summary:

A classic heavy metal sound with some great riffs and fast drumming, think Exodus, Anthrax, Chrome Division and you get the idea. Although I also picked up a few mellower notes with flavours of Ozzy Osbourne, Stiltskin and Rainbow in some tracks.

Iron knights released their self-titled album via Metalbox Recordings on 5th May 2014. Original members Paul ‘Beam’ Robbie and Larry Paterson have a shared musical history, having been in bands together on and off since 1983, when they formed Aftermath in New Zealand. They were both in UK bands Metalhead and Chokehold and relocated somewhere along the way, Larry then spent many years with Blaze Bayley, and his band, before they came together again in Iron Knights. A few line-up changes later the Iron Knighthood recruited Jamie Gibson and Wayne Mann.

Transparent opens with a guitars reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne’s No More Tears and hurtles into bullet drums and a heavier more Anthrax type number. Vicious Circle has a Toxic Waltz by Exodus vibe with more of the bullet drums and screaming riffs. A Chapter’s Lesion brought to mind Inside by Scottish rock band Stiltskin. Genocide has some Metallica style riffage, a bit Seek and Destroy. Bloodstorm is like some strange hybrid of Rainbow and Chrome Division, say Since You’ve Been Gone meets The Moonshine years. The Messenger has a  galloping beat, I thought this would be a good one to accompany a fast military march! Bringing the album to a close is Jericho a very fast, punky number a bit like 13 by Bones but not quite as brutal. A classic heavy metal sound with some great riffs and fast drumming, think Exodus, Anthrax, Chrome Division and you get the idea.

Highlight tracks: Jericho and A Chapter’s Lesion.

About Louise Swift

I first went to a gig in 1981, Gillan at Leeds University. I've been a regular gig goer ever since. I haven't kept count of how many gigs I've been to over the intervening years, but it's a lot! My favourite bands are AC/DC then, in no particular order, Anti-Nowhere League, Slaughter and the Dogs, Towers of London and Dirt Box Disco. I tend to like Glam/Punk and rude offensive lyrics, not sure what that says about me but as Animal would say 'So What!' The question was recently put to me - did I write for any online publications? My reply - No, but I'd like to! Planetmosh was suggested and I found myself offering to review Aces High Festival. Easy peasy I thought! Well not quite, if a jobs worth doing it's worth doing well! I had sixteen bands to research. I found I actually enjoyed that and it kept me too busy to be making lunatic comments on Facebook! ;) Then I felt a bit inadequately qualified. I mean, who am I to comment on others, when my musical expertise extends to being able to play a mean Greensleeves on the recorder and a passable Annie's song on the flute! Haven't picked up either instrument for years! What I do have, however, is over 30 years of experience as a gig goer, so I can comment on what I like and what I don't! It's only my opinion and, if I don't like a band it doesn't mean they are bad, just not to my own liking. I admire anyone who has the guts to get up on that stage and have a go!
