Tirade – Interview

Brit alt rockers TIRADE drop their stunning new EP, Nothing Dramatic, tomorrow. The band have also just released a video for the single, Burned Out – https://youtu.be/14z3UesMDAQ . We caught up with the guys and grilled them about their background and more:

What is the full band line-up, who sings and who plays which instrument?

Jake Tilley – Lead Vocals / Bass Guitar; Josh Pearl – Guitar / Backing vocals; Alex Young – Guitar / Backing vocals; Stevo Somerset – Drums.

How and when did the band form? Tell us anything interesting about your hometown.

The band formed in 2015, we all met at university in Crewe, Cheshire.

The most interesting thing about the town the university was in was literally being in a band and making music; nothing else was really there for us but this made for some great inspiration for songwriting. Luckily we move to Manchester in July 2019 where we’re really going to pick up more momentum, we can’t express how excited we are to live in this city!

When and how did the band really start gelling and solidifying?

2016 while we were writing and then recording our debut EP,  Stevo joined the band as the permanent drummer which made us tighter as a band in general and also brought a new creative influence and dynamic to the music that you hear now.

We really started gelling when we started touring and realised we could put up with each other for long amounts of time in small and confined places; especially the Renault Clio that we slept in many times.

We also feel that while our debut EP helped showcase what we’re about, this was still in our early stages and in the new EP you will really hear how we gel together now; we like to think of ourselves as a more matured band in our personalties and how we write music.

Who are your musical influences?

Lower Than Atlantis, Don Broco, Enter Shikari, VUKOVI, Press to MECO & Boston Manor are some of the main influences.

However, we all have our own varied tastes, ranging from 80’s pop & funk to newer alternative rock and metal styles; which you’ll hear across this new EP.

Where did the name of the band come from?

We went through many overthought names, but settled on TIRADE after Jake realised in the shower that all of his lyrics were passionate and argumentative to people and situations that he disliked.

Tirade

/tʌɪˈreɪd,tɪˈreɪd/

noun

a long, angry speech of criticism or accusation.

How far back does your history with each other (the band members) extend? Are you friends from school or any family relations?

Jake and Josh met in college while studying music and have been writing music together since then, the rest of the band met in university in Cheshire and began writing and performing together to pass the time and get through university stress.

In your opinion, how is your band different from all the other bands out there?

We think that our sound is a fresh take on the current curve in alternative rock; as we mentioned before, we like to draw influences from many different styles so while we stick to our alternative roots, we can still make our music accessible to those who might not be strictly into “alt rock” as a genre in itself.

We are massively influenced in the way we think about writing music by bands like Don Broco and Enter Shikari who like to follow the curve of relevant pop music while still having their own sound that makes them unique and after writing our second EP, we really feel like we have found our ‘sound’ that will please the alternative crowds and make the dad’s dance all at the same time.

If a deaf person were to ask you to describe the sound of your music, how would you describe it?

We would describe ourselves as an amalgamation of all that is great in pop and alt music (past and present), we like to make our songs please all listeners; the musicians in the crowd will hear the complex nuances that we slip into each track but this won’t deter anyone else!

We have tracks that are heavy, punchy and really in your face but then others that have a slower groove with the complex nuances slipped in there that we prviously mentioned. Some of the songs will hit you right in the feels and others will send you into a TIRADE of anger! (In a good way)

We’re an alt rock band at heart that are also very vocal driven and have been compared to the likes of Lower Than Atlantis, Ruben and even Fallout boy in regard to the vocals but we’ve got something for everyone because of where we get our influences from.
